New at The Discovery Reading Club: Parent Coaching

I spend a lot of time thinking about what actually moves the needle for kids who are learning to read. And the answer keeps coming back to the same thing: consistency.

The kids I work with who make the most progress are not just the ones showing up to sessions with me every week. They are the ones getting practice at home too. Every day, even just a little bit. That daily repetition is where the real growth happens.

The problem is, most parents I talk to want to help. They really do. But they do not know where to start. They are up at 11pm googling "how to help my child with reading" and getting buried in conflicting advice, random Pinterest printables, and programs that cost hundreds of dollars and still leave them wondering if they are doing it right.

I kept hearing the same thing over and over: "I want to help, but I don't know what to do."

So I built something for that.

What Parent Coaching Is

Parent coaching is a structured support program where I do the planning and you do the practice.

Here is how it works. We start with a reading assessment so I can understand exactly where your child is. What are their strengths? Where are the gaps? How do they approach reading? Once I have a clear picture, I build a custom 4-week activity plan designed specifically for your child's needs.

The activities are designed for about 30 minutes of structured practice a day, plus 30 minutes of suggested reading. I tell you exactly what to do, step by step. Then every week, we check in. You tell me how things are going, what is clicking, what is not. I answer your questions, troubleshoot, and adjust the plan based on what I am hearing.

At the end of the month, I do a quick progress check with your child, see how they have grown, and build the next cycle's plan based on where they are now.

That is it. No guesswork. No curriculum shopping. No wondering if you are doing it right.

What a Typical Day Looks Like

You sit down with your kid for about 30 minutes. I have already told you exactly what to do.

Maybe today it is a quick phonics warm-up, a few minutes of word building with letter tiles, and some practice reading a short passage I picked for them. The instructions are clear and parent-friendly. You do not need to be a teacher. You do not need any special training. You just follow the plan.

Then you read together for 30 minutes from a book I recommended based on their level and interests.

Some days will be shorter. Some might run a little longer. The goal is consistency, not perfection. If you can get in 20 minutes on a busy day, that still counts.

Who This Is For

Parent coaching is not for every family, and that is okay. But it is a really good fit if any of these sound like you:

You want to be actively involved in your child's reading growth but you need someone to tell you what to do. You are not looking for a tutor to take over. You want to be the one doing the work with your kid. You just need the plan.

You homeschool and want expert guidance on reading instruction. You are already teaching your child everything else. You just need a structured, research-based reading plan and someone checking in to make sure it is working.

Your child needs daily practice but does not necessarily need a tutor in the room for every session. Some kids need intensive specialist support and that is what tutoring is for. But other kids just need consistent, well-designed practice. Coaching gives them that.

Your family is remote or your schedule makes regular in-person sessions difficult. Everything happens through the parent portal, phone, and email. You do not have to be in Bozeman.

How This Is Different From Tutoring

With tutoring, I work directly with your child during our sessions. I am in the room, reading with them, doing the activities, adjusting in real time based on what I see and hear.

With coaching, I design the plan and guide you through it. You are the one sitting with your child every day. I am behind the scenes building the activities, choosing the materials, and checking in with you weekly to make sure everything is on track.

Both are grounded in the science of reading. Both start with understanding where your child is. And you can always switch if your family's needs change.

Some families even do both. They come to me for tutoring once a week and use the coaching plan for daily practice at home between sessions. That combination can be really powerful.

You Do Not Need to Be a Teacher

This is the thing I hear most often when I tell parents about coaching: "I am not a teacher. I would not know how to help my kid with reading."

You do not need to be a teacher. You do not need a degree in education. You do not need to understand the science of reading. That is literally my job.

What you need is 30 minutes a day, a willingness to show up, and someone telling you exactly what to do. That is what I am here for. I build the plan. I write the instructions. I walk you through every activity. And I check in with you every single week to make sure it is working.

You already know your kid better than anyone. I just give you the tools.

What It Costs

A reading assessment is $150 and is the starting point for every family, whether you choose coaching or tutoring. Parent coaching is $199 per month after that. It includes your custom activity plan, weekly check-ins with me, a monthly progress assessment with your child, portal access, and ongoing plan adjustments. You can cancel anytime.

If you are not sure whether coaching or tutoring is the right fit, start with the assessment. After I get to know your child, I will tell you what I would recommend.

I Am Piloting This Now

I am actively working with a few pilot families to test the plans, refine the activities, and make sure the whole process feels clear and doable before I open it up more broadly. The feedback so far has been really encouraging.

If this sounds like something your family needs, or if you know someone who might be a good fit, I would love to hear from you. Send me a text at (406) 579-0449 or an email at candace@thediscoveryreadingclub.com. You can also check out all the details on my Programs & Pricing page
